As of September of this year, about 10 of the 12 tons that the operator set as a goal for 2023 have already been recycled. This initiative invites people to deposit unused electronic devices and equipment in Sodimac’s National Network of Clean Points.

Santiago, October 13, 2023.- Promoting the circular economy in the country, to give a new use to unused equipment and mobile devices, is the main engine that drove WOM and Sodimac to make in 2018 a successful alliance, which after 5 years has allowed the recycling of more than 151 thousand electronic equipment, corresponding to about 40 tons.

The goal grows year by year, and if in 2022 10 tons of recycled equipment were achieved in the 21 clean points of Sodimac, this year both companies announced an increase in the goal seeking to exceed 12 tons. Under this commitment, to date, nearly 10 tons of unused electronic devices and equipment have already been recycled, and the company is steadily approaching the goal.

“In WOM we have an active commitment with the environment, which is materialized with initiatives that allow us to promote the circular economy in the country. We are proud of the results we have obtained, but we will not stop there, we will continue to push our goal year after year, providing our customers and the community with different alternatives for recycling unused electronic equipment and giving them a new useful life”, said Valeria Andía, WOM’s Sustainability Manager.

Within this alliance, the participation of TriCiclos, a non-profit organization in charge of operating the collection centers that receive electronic equipment such as: screens, speakers and decoders, cables, cell phones and tablets, stands out. The recycled raw material is compacted and sent to TriCiclos to transform the electronic devices, thus initiating new productive processes that, as a result, end up in the production of new device chargers, cell phone batteries, headphones, among others.

Commitment to sustainability

WOM recently published the second version of its Sustainability Report, which reports on the progress made during 2022 in social, environmental and governance matters; key pillars for developing a value proposition that, in addition to improving the quality of life of people through connectivity, addresses the challenges faced by society.

Among the most relevant aspects of the Report is that environmental management is also playing an important role in WOM’s work, working systematically on the measurement and reduction of its carbon footprint, through projects such as data centers powered by 100% renewable energy and photovoltaic generators. The above, with a view to achieving certification of its Energy Management System under the ISO 50.001 standard.
