Neighboring countries stand out as the places where the international roaming service is most used. Peru (1st), Argentina (2nd) and Bolivia (3rd) complete the podium where travelers are most connected, according to WOM data.
Likewise, the company reveals that only so far in 2024, the use of data service outside Chile has experienced an increase of 104% more than the total consumed in 2023.
Santiago, September 27th, 2024. In the framework of World Tourism Day, there are many reasons to leave the country, leave behind the outgoing winter, get to know new cultures, look for different beaches, try a different gastronomy or use holidays as an extension of vacations. These and other reasons, work as a perfect pretext to take the suitcases and embark for out of the borders.
Although the destinations to which there is usually the greatest demand for quotes or travel purchases are the Caribbean, North America or Europe, the reality is completely different when viewed from the perspective of roaming usage: neighboring countries are the favorites when it comes to using data outside Chile.
According to the georeferencing of roaming usage obtained by WOM, it can be seen that the destinations preferred by Chilean tourists are within South America, where Peru is the country where most people navigate through the international roaming service. It is followed by Argentina and Bolivia.
Below is the list of the 10 countries with the highest data traffic:
- Perú
- Argentina
- Bolivia

“Connectivity is an essential service for everyone, especially when you decide to travel outside Chile and need to navigate to check maps, manage reservations, look for places to eat, keep in touch with your family and friends or use your social networks. In this context, WOM has identified that there is a significant increase in the use of roaming services, where 33% of our traveling customers traffic data using our international roaming service to stay connected during their trips”, explained Rodrigo Baudrand, Director of New Business at WOM.
Roaming usage: tips to get the most out of it
- One of the tips recommended by WOM to improve the performance of data usage and not stay disconnected is to disable automatic updates so that mobile data is not spent imperceptibly and thus have greater control of these.
- For example, if you are traveling alone, it is advisable to download maps of the place, your favorite music, series or movies beforehand, trying to do it connected to a Wi-Fi network. It is advisable to do this before traveling or at the place where the traveler is staying. Hand in hand with this, it is important to avoid using public networks because they cause greater exposure to data theft.
- On the other hand, if the trip is made in a group or family, and there is a limited budget, it is recommended that the traveling group plan in advance which member will use roaming during the stay.
