● WOM’s FON project is the country’s main digital highway, benefiting 161 municipalities across 10 regions from Arica and Parinacota to Biobío, impacting more than 2.5 million people.
● This initiative involved an investment of over CLP 86 billion and delivers higher-quality “wholesale internet” to areas currently lacking connectivity.

Santiago, June 26, 2025 – WOM has completed the entire National Fiber Optic (FON) project across five macrozones, totaling 7,553 kilometers of fiber. The company has also received authorization from the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) to begin service operations. This landmark project is the largest connectivity network in the country, allowing rural and remote areas of Chile to access the internet.

The FON project serves as the main digital highway of “dark fiber”—fiber that is intended to be leased so that third parties can configure their services without needing to install new fiber cables. It benefits 161 municipalities in 10 regions from Arica and Parinacota to Biobío and impacts more than 2.5 million people.

This initiative involved an investment of over CLP 86 billion and provides higher-quality “wholesale internet” to areas that currently lack connectivity. It is an open and shared infrastructure that any company—including other operators—can use to deploy the last mile and deliver telecommunications services to these areas.

“We are proud to successfully complete the FON project. This allows us to continue strengthening connectivity in the country, especially in rural, isolated, and remote areas. This milestone marks the beginning of a digital society, improving education, healthcare, security, providing greater job opportunities, and promoting equity by closing critical gaps through access to the network. We will continue moving forward firmly in developing digital infrastructure and remain committed to bringing connectivity to the entire country,” said Chris Bannister, CEO of WOM Chile.

It’s worth noting that the FON project is a fundamental pillar for the deployment and full use of new technologies, helping to close not only the digital divide but also delivering benefits to millions of people across Chile.
