- In the tenth edition of the event that brings together leaders in technology and innovation, the Director of New Business at WOM Chile, Rodrigo Baudrand, discussed the opportunities offered by the 5G network.
Santiago, April 2025.- Chile became the technological meeting point of Latin America by hosting the 10th Latin American Congress on AI, Technology, and Business, América Digital 2025, one of the most important events in innovation, digital transformation, and business in the region. In this edition, WOM participated to address the impact of connectivity on businesses, the opportunities that the 5G network offers in various industries, and the challenges faced by operators.
The Director of New Business at WOM Chile, Rodrigo Baudrand, and the Head of Sales Mobile Networks for the Southern Cone at Nokia, Francisco Pardo, explored these topics in a panel titled “The challenge of monetizing the 5G network: what we should and should not do in Latam” and shared their experiences within the telecommunications industry with the attendees.
“We see that the trend has been to migrate to high-speed, high-capacity technologies such as 5G. Telecommunications today play a crucial role in innovation, not only as a tool for connection but as a catalyst that turns ideas into tangible realities. In this context, we see that to enhance business, we must make the most of the opportunities offered by telecommunications. Today, the 5G network can enable a variety of new applications and services, promote industrial automation, generating a significant impact on the economy and productivity of the country,” said Rodrigo Baudrand.
Connectivity is an opportunity for growth and development for businesses. Today, a small entrepreneur in a rural area can access the same resources and tools as a large company in a capital city. Digital platforms, social media, and mobile applications have allowed market entry barriers to be lowered, thus fostering an innovation ecosystem. In this sense, WOM’s commitment, along with the Telco industry, is to further facilitate access to the Internet and quality service so that more businesses have the opportunity to create solutions for the benefit of people and the country.
Monetizing the 5G Network: How to Get the Most Out of This Technology
The panelists also concluded that the monetization of the 5G network is still in its early stages and remains a challenge for the Telco industry.
In this regard, Francisco Pardo commented: “Monetization of 5G networks is already a reality both globally and in Chile. This progress has been made possible thanks to the strategic role that companies are assuming and the renewed focus of operators on the B2B business. The challenge now is to work internally on the customization and adaptation of use cases, identifying which customers can benefit in each situation. It is not about seeking a single 5G ‘killer app’ that solves everything and guarantees automatic profitability for all segments. The true value of 5G lies in how it solves, in a differentiated way, various specific needs using its attributes.”
The fifth-generation technology enables higher speeds, improving customer experience. The ultra-low latency of the 5G network is ideal for robotics, autonomous vehicles, industrial automation processes, and the connectivity of thousands of simultaneous devices, which is crucial for sectors such as energy, water, utilities, transportation, and retail.
