WOM Chile: The company’s milestones and progress 30 days after exiting Chapter 11

  • Among the milestones, the delivery of 100% of the 5 macro-zones of the National Optical Fiber Project (FON) and the approval of new financial resources by the new board of directors for the deployment of 120 priority sites that are part of the 5G project stand out.

 

April 25, 2025.- One month after WOM’s exit from the Chapter 11 process and the return of Chris Bannister to the company’s leadership, the company is pleased to announce important advances for the 5G Project, National Optical Fiber, network capacity improvements in key stations of Line 1 of the subway. Also, for the last quarter of this year and in coordination with the Chilean Navy, the company is preparing to visit Antarctica to install infrastructure and deliver to Chile the southernmost antenna in the country.

In relation to the National Optical Fiber Project (FON), WOM announces that it has completed all (100%) of the 5 macro-zones awarded, which correspond to 7,553 kilometers of fiber and the company has received authorization from Subtel to begin operations of the service. This project benefits 10 regions between Arica and Parinacota and Biobío, 161 municipalities and more than 2.5 million people in the country.

“We are proud to announce this great milestone for the benefit of the country, we overcame great challenges such as natural disasters, security situations, vandalism and conservation requirements of national monuments that implied redesigning the trajectory of the deployment in protected areas. But we succeeded and today we have the approval of our regulator to start operations of this service”, said WOM Chile.

The company adds that, “The national optical fiber project is a fundamental pillar for the deployment and full use of new technologies. It also strengthens national connectivity and contributes to reduce the digital divide in Chile”.

Also, the new WOM Chile board recently approved new financial resources for the deployment of a first group of 120 priority sites that are part of the 5G project. These sites will be deployed mainly in the northern part of the country due to favorable weather conditions. In relation to the ICSID process, both parties have maintained a constructive and open attitude to dialogue.

Regarding connectivity on Line 1 of the Santiago Metro, in 1 month the company has improved network capacity at seven stations: Estación Central, Salvador, Santa Lucía, Pedro de Valdivia, La Moneda, Los Leones and Manuel Montt, and plans to reach 15 more in the coming months.

In addition, during the last quarter of this year and in coordination with the Chilean Navy, WOM plans to visit Antarctica to install infrastructure and deliver the southernmost antenna in the country.

Regarding the Identity Validation Regulation that came into force on February 5, 2025 by Subtel, we are proud to be the only operator that implemented the new security procedures in full compliance with the regulation.

WOM has stood out for its commitment to reduce the digital divide in the most isolated and rural areas of the country. In this sense, it announces that it has already delivered free internet to 203 schools, mainly located in rural areas, benefiting more than 50,000 students and teachers. In addition, for the second consecutive year and with the support of Technovation Girls, the WOM-Duoc UC Scholarship was launched, which will provide free internet to 100 students across the country who are pursuing higher education, either university or technical-professional. In 2024, with the support of the Association of Rural Municipalities (AMUR), the scholarship has already benefited 100 students.

In conclusion, the company emphasizes that “Each of these milestones confirms our commitment to the progress of each of our projects and initiatives and we reaffirm that we will continue working to reduce the digital divide in Chile for the benefit of all people living in the country”.
