This milestone is part of the fulfillment of the commitment acquired by the operator under the 5G contest, which includes connecting 366 isolated localities in the country.

This commitment had its first major milestone in the mandatory locality of Teguel, in the town of Quiquel, Los Lagos Region, with the inauguration of an antenna that will provide connectivity to this remote area of Chile.

Dalcahue, January 24, 2023 – WOM, the operator with the largest 5G network in the country, took an important step in its commitment to connect 366 isolated localities throughout Chile. Together with local and regional authorities, the company achieved the major milestone of the social considerations it committed to under the 5G tender, as the only winner of the 700 MHz band bidding process; the installation of the infrastructure that will provide connectivity to the inhabitants of the town of Teguel, in the commune of Dalcahue, Los Lagos Region.

The deployment of these social benefits will allow the inhabitants of remote areas of the country to have access to quality telephony and Internet services in areas where there was no or very limited connectivity. This will undoubtedly contribute to the social inclusion and local and economic development of their communities and to the improvement of the quality of life of the people who live there.

The event was attended by local authorities, including the Provincial Delegate of Chiloé, Armando Barría; the Mayor of Dalcahue, Alex Gómez; and the Seremi of Transport and Telecommunications of Los Lagos, Pablo Joost.

“WOM’s historic commitment to improve the quality of life of the people, democratizing telecommunications in all corners of the country is evident here. We will continue to decentralize connectivity, allowing access to telephone and internet services at fair prices, which will level the playing field, so that no one is left out of the digital world, education, health and development and the opportunities that this entails”, said Catalina Achermann, VP of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability of WOM.

WOM’s nationwide commitment includes connecting with 4G technology 9 thousand kilometers of roads in the country, 16 Presidential Delegations, 199 hospitals and 24 ministries. It also considers providing 5G technology to 199 hospitals, 17 airports, 12 tourist centers, 28 higher education centers, 23 ports, 16 Presidential Delegations and 24 ministries.

The Mayor of Dalcahue, Alex Gómez, added that: “We are grateful to WOM for the possibility of benefiting the community and the people. Being an area where there is no connectivity, it is very difficult to access telephone and internet communication. Therefore, we believe that it will help the sector to have a better quality of life and the municipality to connect the commune of Dalcahue”.

The Seremi of Transport and Telecommunications of the Lakes Region, Pablo Joost, pointed out that “this type of antenna has advanced technology, which will allow to have a better capacity to navigate, higher speed and respond to the needs that people have in terms of connectivity for education, for work, for health and to be permanently connected to the world”.

As part of WOM’s permanent support to the communities in which it operates, the company also signed a cooperation agreement, which seeks to install skills in this area, promoting that people acquire the basic tools necessary to interact in the digital world, taking advantage of the benefits of the Internet.

WOM today is the operator that is deploying more antennas throughout Chile, and thanks to its large investment in the spectrum auction to deploy 5G and strengthen the 4G network, the company has set a precedent in Chile, being the only one in history to develop infrastructure in three frequencies simultaneously (700 MHz, AWS-E and 3.5 GHz).
