Santiago, August 24, 2023 – WOM published the second version of its Sustainability Report, which reports on the progress made by the company during 2022 in social, environmental and governance matters; key pillars for developing a value proposition that, in addition to improving the quality of life of people through connectivity, addresses the challenges faced by society.
Among the most relevant aspects of the Report is the development of community dialogues -in which more than 1,200 people participated, in addition to authorities- to facilitate the expansion of coverage in 269 communities involved in the National Fiber Optic (FON) infrastructure project from the region of Arica and Parinacota to the Biobío region, and the deployment of the 5G network throughout the country.
It also highlights the sustained progress in the positioning of this technology as a tool to promote local development, training teachers across the country in technological skills, programming and digital development, benefiting more than 18 thousand students in vulnerable conditions during 2022.
“These advances are a true reflection of the commitment we acquired and the work we have done to meet one of our main goals for 2025: to shorten the digital divide in the country and provide free connectivity to more than 500 thousand people. An ambitious challenge, which we are undertaking convinced that from our position we have much to contribute to promote the welfare of the community”, explained WOM’s VP of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Catalina Achermann.
Environmental management is also playing an important role in WOM’s work, working systematically on measuring and reducing its carbon footprint through projects such as data centers powered by 100% renewable energy and photovoltaic generators. This, with a view to achieving certification of its Energy Management System under the ISO 50.001 standard.
“We have made an active commitment to caring for the planet, promoting, among other things, more efficient energy management and greater awareness of the destination of the waste generated by our operations. In this sense, today we trace all our facilities and we have reached around 50% recovery, in line with our goal of reaching 80% recycling by 2025”, added the executive.
To reinforce these actions, WOM has continued its alliance with SODIMAC to promote the recycling of electronic equipment, which by 2023 has the ambitious goal of recycling more than 12 tons of waste through the National Network of Clean Points, considerably surpassing what was achieved in previous years.
On the other hand, the operator that ranks 2nd in internet connections (3G/4G/5G) remains firmly committed to promoting an internal culture centered on the values of diversity, inclusion, equality and respect, thus enhancing people’s sense of belonging. Therefore, during 2022 the company continued to strengthen these principles by focusing on four pillars: LGBTIQ+ Community, Multiculturalism, Gender Equality and People with Disabilities. The company received the Iguala Conciliation Seal awarded by the National Service for Women and Gender Equality (Sernameg), a recognition that certifies the company’s work in promoting equal rights, opportunities and gender equality.
All the work being done by the company has had an impact on the community. Proof of this is that during 2022 WOM received a series of awards, including first place in mobile telephony in the ProCalidad National Customer Satisfaction Award, ALCO Consumer Loyalty, Best Customer Experience (BCX), and in CADEM’s ‘Citizen Brands’ ranking, in the ‘Telecommunications’ category.
