This reforestation seeks to offset 120 tons of greenhouse gases, which compensates the total emissions of waste generated during the year 2023 in the company’s stores, corporate buildings and warehouses.

Santiago, November 06, 2024. In its commitment to a more sustainable future, WOM took a new step in offsetting its carbon footprint. Through a collaborative reforestation day organized together with Corporación Cultiva, 60 of the company’s employees volunteered to plant 240 native trees in the Cerro de Renca Metropolitan Park, which suffered a major fire last summer, creating a green space for this sector of the capital.

During the activity, native species were planted, typical of a sclerophyllous forest, which withstand months of drought and extreme temperatures, such as litre, quillay, huingán, tara, hawthorn, algarrobo, colliguay and peumo, among others. The project includes irrigation of the species for two years to ensure their proper development.

“The reforestation carried out is a way of translating sustainability into concrete, in volunteer activities with the participation of WOMers across all areas of the company, which engages and enriches us,” said Eduardo Jara, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at WOM.

Martina Valdés, Environmental Specialist of WOM’s Sustainability Management, explained that “over their lifetime, these 240 reforested species will absorb 120 tons of CO2 equivalent, which offsets the total emissions of waste generated during the year 2023 in stores throughout the country, corporate buildings and warehouses”.

Matías Herceg, Executive Director of Corporación Cultiva, said that “the lack of green spaces in the city is dramatic and affects Chile’s most disadvantaged communities to a greater extent, so we must act with ambition and a sense of urgency. In this alliance with WOM, our joint task is to turn the northwestern sector of Santiago into a new green lung”.

With this type of actions, WOM reaffirms its commitment to continue contributing to the environment, generating a positive impact in its actions.
