April 30, 2023.- The use of technological applications through a smartphone to socialize and communicate continues to increase. This was shown by the latest report prepared by WOM Chile, which reveals that the applications most used by users during the first quarter -that is, those with the highest data consumption- were Tik Tok and Youtube, which grew in traffic per user in relation to the same period of 2024 by 32% and 29%, respectively.

The study also reveals that the application with the highest increase in mobile data usage was WhatsApp, which recorded a 42% growth during the first quarter compared to the same period last year. It is followed by Spotify, the popular music and podcast listening app, with a 39% increase in data traffic per user.

In addition, streaming – one of the most popular uses among individuals – accounted for the bulk of overall traffic, registering a 2% increase in mobile data usage in the first three months of the year. In this category, the application with the highest traffic per user was Netflix, which posted a 3% increase during the first quarter compared to the same period of 2024.

On the other hand, traffic in the game category is becoming increasingly important in mobile data consumption. According to the report, this item was the one that grew the most in the first part of the year, registering a 39% increase during the first quarter compared to the same period of 2024. Meanwhile, the segment of Internet calls and video calls (VoIP), which is the main tool for holding online meetings or communicating with family and friends, reversed the trend seen in previous years and recorded a significant increase of 17% in the first quarter.

“The growing use of data confirms that, in addition to having a wide network coverage, it is essential to provide a quality service that can meet the connectivity needs of our customers and offer a proposal according to new preferences and market trends. In line with this, at WOM we provide added value to our customers through benefits and subscriptions in streaming platforms, gaming, music and security services”, says Kamila Dubó, Director of Markets at WOM Chile.

According to the report, the peak in general data traffic occurred last Sunday, March 2, in the context of the end of the vacations and the cancellation of the first concert of the singer Shakira in Chile. On the other hand, March was the month with the highest growth in mobile data traffic, registering a 15% increase.

At the regional level, the largest increases in mobile data traffic during the first quarter compared to the same period of 2024 were recorded in Ñuble (271%), Biobío (261%) and Araucanía (247%).
